Telephone Number Overview

PURA is charged with the responsibilities to administer telephone numbers in The Gambia in a fair and transparent manner as established by the IC Act 2009. To achieve this, PURA develops a National Numbering Plan for both fixed and wireless communication networks and ensures that the numbers are available for allocation.

Currently, the telephone numbers are of a seven-digits format and each operator has their own prefixes, see the table below. However, there are plans optimise the numbers in a more efficient manner by increasing the numbers to a nine-digit format. The National numbering plan is updated regularly to reflect updates and reviews carried out on the National Numbering schemes of The Gambia.

The table below shows the current allocation of numbers by PURA.

National Numbering Plan

The National Numbering Plan describes how numbers are administered and managed.ย  It sets up a uniform numbering scheme and provides a set of rules and guidelines for the use and assignment of numbers to telecommunication services.

The National Numbering Plan provides, more importantly, a uniform dialling procedure to be used in the network to allow the subscribers and operators to set up the following types of calls:

  • Local Calls
  • International Calls
  • Short Code calls to Emergency and Special services independent of where the call is originating from in the country.
